Got (Raw) Milk?

nutrition -

Organic Pastures is leading the movement for sustainable, organic, grass fed, and humane raw milk production and distribution. They have revolutionized the raw milk industry and are setting the safety and quality standards that should have been implemented years ago instead of the industry resorting to destroying milk via pasteurization in order to maintain the inhumane conditions that most cows are subjected to. Learn more at the OP FAQ...

Why Raw?

This quick reference guide from RAW USA clarifies many of the major distinctions between Conventional, USDA Organic, and RAW USA dairy practices.

Pasture Fed Cows

Organic Pasture cows are some of the best treated cows on planet earth. For example, instead of herding the cows into the barn for milking, Organic Pastures designed and developed a "mobile milking barn" which they drive to the cows. The cows then get milked on the field which provides them with more grazing time and less herding time. After which they naturally move to another part of the field. Then they start grazing on fresh grass in another area and after a few days the the barn follows them once again for milking. Genius! Learn more details about the milking process from this 2003 issue of Hoard's Dairyman (PDF).

Sponsor a Cow

Several organic dairies in California are going out of business, and many of their cows will be sent to slaughter or sold to conventional dairies. Organic Pastures is currently leading a sustainable cow rescue to bring these cows to their dairy for milk production, with your sponsorship. Your sponsored cow will retire at Malibu Compost where it will live out life hanging out on the pasture, eating, and pooping. The folks at Malibu Compost use their fresh cow manure as a base to create certified biodynamic compost. Full circle! Sponsoring a cow will also ensure that is more raw butter (yum) available for consumers.

I love supporting and promoting companies that, as Malibu Compost puts it: "...are passionate about the stewardship of this Earth we all share, respect for its people, plants and animals, and utilizing business as a force for social change."

Props to Organic Pastures. I'm a huge fan of all of their dairy products which I have found to be very healing in so many ways. I'm grateful to be able to have access to such high quality raw milk for when my body craves it. I haven't checked out Malibu Compost yet, but I will definitely look into getting a bag of their compost once spring sets in and I'm ready to garden!

Yes, Organic Pastures also sells raw almonds... for those that don't know, nearly all of the almonds you find in the grocery store are pasteurized, even if they are labeled raw. http://goo.gl/OYvJ

Their cheese is great and also really raw... most cheese found in the grocery store labeled as raw is also not truly raw. For example, Organic Valley cheese is heated to 150 to 159 degrees and still labeled as raw.

Also, Whole Foods has just made the unfortunate decision to stop carrying raw milk due to pressure from their insurance agency. It's their loss though, as the raw milk community is very vigilant about having access to quality whole milk and will just spend their dollars elsewhere. In Venice & Santa Monica you can find raw milk at Co-opportunity, Rainbow Acres, farmers markets, and a couple of other places.

Here is an excellent 45 minute interview with Mark McAfee of Organic Pastures: http://articles.mercola.com/si...rview.aspx

This interview illustrates point by point why I'm such an extreme fan of raw milk. Organic milk is not good enough, still damaged. Conventional milk is pure poison. Even if you subscribe to a vegan philosophy, this comes down to supporting consumer access to high quality food. Milk and now almonds are now almost always required to be pasteurized. What's next? I support consumer choice.
